Golden Circle Insights: Build Your “HOW”
Developing a Legacy to Shape a Sustainable Future
Can one person's pursuit of sustainability genuinely make a difference? Can it inspire others to embark on their own journeys toward eco-conscious living? Let me take you on an exciting adventure – my transformation into a sustainability champion and the profound impact it had on both my personal life and my design studio, bigger creative.
The Spark: A Scorching Summer of Change
The summer was a whirlwind, filled with family, fun, and my newfound love for biking. But as the temperature soared to record-breaking highs, I knew it was time for a change. A sustainable future beckoned, but the road ahead still had several challenges. With determination in my heart, I embarked on a journey to explore sustainable living possibilities and redesign my life and business.
As a newcomer to the world of sustainability, I began as most do – by googling buzzwords. Soon, I stumbled upon Climate Neutral and their Brand Emission Estimator, a tool that would help me understand my carbon footprint. I conducted a self-audit, examining everything I touched, from the tech I used to the companies I worked with. The results were enlightening, spurring me to scrutinize my work, home, and the same products I used daily.
This journey made me question the sustainability of the organizations I worked with. I delved deep, researching their sustainability claims and even contacting PR teams on Twitter for clarity. As I unraveled the complexities of my daily practices, I discovered that I had been slowly transitioning towards a more sustainable lifestyle for years, which fueled my desire to share my story and inspire others.
Learning from Leaders: Finding Inspiration in Sustainability Pioneers
Seeing well-known companies like Kickstarter, All Birds, and Peak Design embrace the Climate Neutral program inspired me. I realized that businesses could make a difference, and this knowledge ignited my determination to reduce my emissions and make my design studio more environmentally friendly. I discovered that opportunities for sustainability lay in every aspect of my life. Every decision had an impact, from my work environment to the tools and technology I used. Small changes, such as adopting energy-efficient lighting or office recycling programs, may seem insignificant but cumulatively create a meaningful difference.
Embracing a Greener New York: A Sustainable Decision
One of my first sustainable choices was moving from Florida to New York. By embracing the city's mass transit system and tapping into its renewable energy policies, I contributed to a greener future. New York's infrastructure and culture allowed me to connect more deeply with the sustainable lifestyle I was pursuing.
Determined to make my home more sustainable, I replaced traditional light bulbs with energy-saving Philips Hue LED bulbs, reducing my energy consumption and carbon footprint. Additionally, I participated in Green Mountain Energy's renewable electricity source offset program, ensuring 25% of my electricity came from wind and solar power. I even started composting, further reducing waste and emissions. Making your home energy-efficient is even as simple as switching to a smart thermostat, saving up to 10% of electricity consumption annually. Most energy companies offer instant rebates through their marketplaces, making your purchase environmentally friendly and cost-effective.
Transforming Bigger Creative: Sustainable Business Practices
As I made these changes in my personal life, I saw the potential to adopt sustainable practices within my design studio. From working remotely to collaborating with eco-conscious partners and making greener purchasing decisions, I took the initiative to make bigger creative more environmentally responsible. The outcome of my journey has been a more sustainable lifestyle, a reduced carbon footprint, and even a positive impact on my bank account. I evaluated vendors and programs to minimize our carbon footprint. This process involved slimming down our files, auditing cloud services, and reducing printing deliverables. I transformed my business operations by consolidating daily operations to a few critical systems, switching to an eco-friendly bank, and choosing sustainable printing options like Moo Cotton. But this story is far from over. This is merely the beginning of my ongoing commitment to sustainability.
Cultivating Wellness and Sustainability: The Edn Home Garden Experience
My journey towards a sustainable lifestyle included revamping my diet and supporting eco-conscious companies. As Father's Day approached, I discovered the Edn Home Garden, an indoor garden that began my food-growing journey. Currently providing lettuce, green onions, chives, and basil, I'm also exploring the growth of green beans, tomatoes, cilantro, and peppers. The Edn Garden allows for the hydroponic planting of your seeds, bringing freshness to your table. This green-thumb awakening has not only improved my health but has also offered stress relief and mental well-being.
With travel significantly contributing to carbon emissions, I sought a greener mode of transportation to complement my sustainable lifestyle. That's when I discovered the VanMoof X3 e-bike. Despite initial hiccups, this smart e-bike has become my daily driver. Now, I cover Brooklyn and Lower Manhattan on this eco-friendly alternative, which has also become my go-to for buying fresh produce from farmers' markets and working remotely. Besides being an environmentally responsible choice, the e-bike has also improved my fitness levels.
Charting the Course: Embracing Sustainable Business and Personal Choices
Emulating everything digitally, from client meetings to work sessions, has significantly reduced travel requirements, further enhancing my sustainable lifestyle. Today, 90% of Gen X consumers are willing to pay 10% more for sustainable products. Moreover, I've moved from Google to Ecosia, a search engine that plants trees with every search.
As I seek partnerships with businesses committed to sustainability, I aim to achieve carbon-neutral certification and join 1% for the Planet. My journey is just the beginning. As more people embrace change, a ripple effect will inspire others to join the sustainability movement. It's time to take action and make a difference in our lives and businesses.

A conscious branding comic studio is not a design shop with comic-book graphics. It is a strategic, story-led, sustainability-minded studio that helps brands understand who they are, what they stand for, and how to make their work easier to believe in.
